Dr. Joyce Dorsey Kenner was appointed principal of Whitney M. Young Magnet High School in Chicago, Illinois in August of 1995. She served as an assistant principal prior to her appointment. Dr. Kenner is from Dayton, Ohio and received her Bachelor of Science degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, majoring in physical education and health, her Master's degree from Wright State University in Fairborn, Ohio, and a doctorate degree of education from Loyola University in Curriculum and Instruction. For almost four decades, Dr. Kenner has held various positions including teacher, coach, coordinator, innovator, and administrator in Ohio and Illinois. She served as the Deputy Education Director for the PUSH for Excellence program at Operation PUSH under the leadership of Reverend Jesse L. Jackson.

Dr. Kenner has demonstrated her commitment to the educational process; the social, mental, and physical well-being of all children. She is actively involved in the community-at-large. She is the president of the Chicago Public Schools Athletic Association Executive Board in which she has been a member for over 20 years. In the capacity of principal, Whitney M. Young Magnet High School has been voted as one of the top high schools in the country by Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report, and is recognized as one of the premier college preparatory high schools in the state of Illinois; has been recognized for its outstanding Advanced Placement program, its Academic Decathlon team, its many athletic programs, and its diverse student body coupled with an outstanding faculty and staff which consistently produces National Merit scholarship winners.

Dr. Kenner was selected for an Outstanding Leadership Award given by Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Principal's Association, received the Outstanding Commitment in Education award by the State Treasurer Mr. Michael W. Frerichs, Golden Apple Stanley C. Golder Award for Excellence semifinalist, nominated for membership totheHeadmaster'sAssociation, bestowed theFirst Step HumanitarianAward forvisibilityin thecommunityand forengaging in constructive and productive programs for young people, received several school academic achievement awards resulting in financial compensationby Chicago Public Schools, and a Today's Chicago Woman.  Dr. Kenner is one of a set of triplets. She is married to Greg W. Kenner and has one son, Julian.
